History

In 1958 Francis Woods designed and built a ski house for his family at Mad River that sat on the same foundation as shown above.  The existing north bedroom (left side of house) is part of the original design/structure. The house is on a long and narrow half acre, which was first surveyed by Ken Quakenbush and the late Tex Thompson.

The house always worked well for a family with guests. It was, and still is, a neatly constructed home with generous loft space for sleeping.

Later, in the mid sixties, the house was sold to Charles Heming. Growing up in the sixties, I enjoyed many winter nights in the house with the Heming family. In 2003 I purchased that little piece of paradise, which is a stone’s throw from the Single Chair lift.

The house was recently rebuilt, keeping the same footprint but adding a bit more height to the structure.  It is super insulated with spray foam insulation, it has gas for both cooking and heating. There is a wood burning stove that can easily heat the entire space on the coldest of nights.

The old three hundred gallon septic tank has been replaced with a new one thousand gallon tank.

The house is flanked by two bedrooms, plus two sleeping lofts, with one full bath and an unfinished room set aside for a half bath.  It has a front deck and rear balcony. There is a large living/kitchen area on the main level and a mechanical & storage room below the deck. The flooring is bamboo and floats off (not attached to) the subfloor. This allows for better thermal insulation. The front window was designed to resemble the window at the Mad River base box.  A perfectly straight site line up Single Chair to the Starks Nest is seen from the front window. For those who appreciate Stark Mountain, it’s a view that is nothing less then spiritual,  ...and the dramatic view, out the back of the house, confirms Mad River’s slogan, ski it if you can.”

The house has approximately 1,250 SF of floor space with room for expansion.

Anyone who skis Mad River knows parking is difficult. Fortunately, the property has deeded parking spots in front of the house.

Asking price is $375,000. Yearly expenses including taxes are around $6,000.
